"Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth." - Psalm 57:1-3
Dear Friend,
Over the years I have enjoyed hearing and often participating in singing of the spiritual, "I'm So Glad Trouble Don't Last Always." Just the title of the song is enough to start a shout! The song starts with the line of the title and a little further a question is posed, "Oh my Lord, Oh my Lord, what shall I do, what shall I do?" I started doing a little refreshing of my memory and I'm so glad trouble don't last always is repeated 3 times at the beginning, followed by Oh my Lord 2 times, and what shall I do 2 times. It seems to me that there is quite a bit of contemplation going on by the writer of the song.
There is confidence being built by the declaration of the fact the certainty that although trouble comes it will also pass. Psalm 57, the Word of God supports this. The One who has the power to cause trouble to cease is identified: "Oh my Lord." The Psalmist in Psalm 57 cries unto God for mercy in trouble, for refuge in trouble, and for a place to "wait" during trouble.
The songwriter of the spiritual and the Psalmist seek answers of what to do in the midst of trouble. Just because trouble is present does not mean we should stop serving. I heard a preacher say that a good waiter, waits! A good waiter serves.
Dear Lord, whatever the situation is today, I know that you are with me. Teach me to serve in the midst of whatever comes. Even as I wait for you let me wait on you that is to serve you only and always. In Jesus name. Amen.
Praise God! Trouble don't last always!
God bless!
Sis. Stephanie
