Luke 2:8-11King James Version (KJV)
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Dear Friends,
The angel that appeared to the shepherds on that first Christmas morn brought good news to them. I imagine the shepherds as described in second chapter of St. Luke. They were working the late shift. We are told that they were keeping watch at night.
It was at night when this group of workers received the announcement. On many jobs there is a smaller crew at night. The night workers are getting work done in preparation for the morning shift. It was to this crew that the angel of the Lord appeared.
When the angel of the Lord appeared and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, undoubtedly they were afraid because this was an unexpected visit. They did not expect to see an angel or a bright light come out of nowhere on a dark night.
Yet, the night visitor let the shepherds know that there was no cause no be alarmed. There was no need to be afraid. The angel proclaimed:

The news was good and it was one not just of joy but of great joy!
The message:
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
During the Christmas season we hear the words of Luke shared in sermons, through songs, recitations and on Christmas cards.
May we endeavor in the new year to live the spirit of Christmas celebration each day.
Let us offer the gift of the Lord's presence through our actions. Through our actions we can allow others to unwrap the gifts of love and compassion as they witness our faith evidenced by lights shining in darkness.
God bless!
in Christ,
Sis. Stephanie
